Obituary

Alta Joy Kent, 94, formerly of Richmond, died on Friday, June 3, 2022, at Vintage Park in Gardner, KS.

Alta was born on February 18, 1928, in Lathrop, the daughter of Burt and Sarah Lee (Howe) Belcher.  She was united in marriage to Gilbert Theodore Kent of Plattsburg on September 15, 1947; he preceded her in death on February 1, 1984.

Survivors include: one son, Jerry (Marsha) Kent of Topeka, KS; six grandchildren: Jason Kent, Brandon (Shannon) Kent, Lindsey (Joey) Webb, David Jones, Nathan (Lisa) Jones and Micheal Jones; 12 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Joyce Ann Jones; three brothers: Robert Keith Belcher, William Franklin Belcher, and Lloyd Burton Belcher; four sisters: her twin sister, Anna Joyce Dykes, Erma Lee Smither, Carolyn Jean Wilson, and Gloria Louise Estes.

Alta was reared and educated in the area of her birth and graduated from Lathrop High School in 1946.  In addition to raising her family as a housewife and homemaker, she had also worked outside the home as a telephone operator and cashier for several supermarkets.  She enjoyed collecting angels and quilting.  She liked travelling with her twin sister and brother-in-law.  She enjoyed all of her family and had a special relationship especially in her later years with her nieces and nephews.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the Hardin Baptist Church or the Ray County Hospital Physical Therapy Department.  Memorial can be dropped off or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 E. Main Street – P.O. Box 190, Richmond.

Visitation with funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. with services to follow at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will be Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg.  Please remember to share your memories of Alta with the family by visiting www.thurmanfuneralhome.com.
