Alta May Smith, 99, of Richmond, died Wednesday, November 9, 2022, at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.

Alta was born on July 17, 1923, in Richmond, the daughter of Leonard and Elsie May (Chowning) Odell.  She was united in marriage to Hugo A. Smith of Camden on June 1, 1940; he preceded her in death on August 30, 1987.

Survivors include: son, Larry Smith of Richmond; three daughters: Huetta Snelling of Richmond, Elaine (David) Myers of Richmond, and Lois Harmon of Scottsdale, AZ; 16 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Betty Scroghan, grandson, Larry Smith, II, brother, C.W. Odell, and two sisters, Betty Hill, and Coleen Keytes.

Alta was reared and educated in the area of her birth.  She was a housewife and homemaker, raising her family.  Alta was a very special mama to her children.  She loved cooking, sewing, and embroidering.  Alta was of the Christian faith.  She will be dearly missed by her family.
