Obituary

Mary Elizabeth (Beth) McGinnis Hughes was born on July 25, 1940, to James and Viola (Mallory) McGinnis of Henrietta, MO. She went to her heavenly home on January 4, 2023.

Following graduation, she moved to Kansas City where she attended Kansas City Business College then went to work as a petty cash auditor for Interstate Brands. She was united in marriage to Doyle (Ed) Hughes of Oklahoma City, OK on February 19, 1966 at First Baptist Church in Henrietta. They had two daughters, Shannon Marie and Piper LeaNette.

After the girls were born, she worked part time as an auditor, secretary and bookkeeper but her main love was staying home and raising her girls. She was known for baking hundreds of cookies and favorite foods for them and their many friends. She was active in PTA, Ray County American Cancer Society for 20 years and several extension clubs. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church of Henrietta where she had served as a church treasurer, secretary, GA and Acteens leader, taught Vacation Bible School for many years and was a member of BYW, WMU and sang in the church choir. She worked tirelessly to help in the effort to pass the school bond to build the new Richmond High School and to raise money for tennis courts that was ultimately used for building of the multi-purpose building.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, daughters Shannon (Steve) Cox and Piper (Ron) Peterson, grandsons Kyle (Allison) Cox and Matt (Linzy) Peterson, granddaughters, Kecia (Dwayne) Whitley and Melissa Genson (Megan Keller) and the loves of her life, her great-grandchildren Kayden Cox, Karsyn Cox, Jaxx Whitley, Anistyn Whitley, Caleb Whitley, Kinsey Peterson, Xander Peterson, Ellie Peterson, Finn Keller-Novelli, Shay Keller-Novelli, her brother Phillip (Judi) McGinnis, nieces  Alyson (Zac) Crane and Charissa Blan, nephews Jeff (Amy) Harlin, Todd Harlin,  Jim (Laquita) Clay and Rusty Hughes, sisters by choice Sheryl Franklin and Francine Cheshewalla-Parsons, her other mother, Pauline Karl and all of the Marrant-Eldredge family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother James Howard McGinnis, sisters–in-law Carol Jean (Richard) Harlin and Dorothy Clay, nephews Jimmy Charles Harlin and Andy Clay, and sisters by choice Patsy Patterson and Judy Kuntz.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, Tunnel to Towers Foundation or Ray County Humane Society.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.
