Don Rae "Hogan" Vandiver, 83, of Richmond, died Saturday, October 6, 2018 at the Shirkey Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
He was born on January 10, 1935 in Orrick to Roy Dean and Flossie Woods Vandiver.
Survivors include his children, Sheila (Gerald) Talmadge of Maryville; Melinda (Steve) Reardon of Liberty; and Matt (Christy) Vandiver of Cedar Park, TX; 7 grandchildren: Gavin (Shayne) Talmadge, Selina Talmadge, Allison (Kody) Downing, Bailey Reardon (Jarret Maxwell), Hope Vandiver, Lily Vandiver and Reese Vandiver; and one great-grandson, Grayson Talmadge. He is also survived by his brother and best friend, Richard (Dick) Vandiver of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Hogan was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Jewel Vandiver, Harold "Toad" Vandiver, R.D. "Dag" Vandiver and Bob Vandiver; two sisters: Anna Jo Middleton and Billie Hicks.
Hogan was employed for 30 plus years for Garney Construction. He was an accomplished heavy equipment operator and travelled across the country until he retired in 2006. He was extremely proficient in operating big excavators, such as CAT and Komatsu. Garney Construction established a service award in Hogan's name that is handed out yearly to operators for excellent service and ability. He was known to have once picked up a tire with an excavator, swung it around and threw it on to a fence post like he was throwing horse shoes, he was that good. He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local #101. Hogan was a proud United States Army Veteran. He was of the Methodist faith.
The family suggest memorial contribution be made to the Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. They can be mailed or dropped off to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond, with Rev. Art Endsley to officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home on Wednesday starting at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow in South Point Cemetery, east of Orrick, with full military honors provided by the Ray County Veterans.
