Obituary

Donna Lee Shields, 81, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 8, 2020, while surrounded by family at NorthCare Hospice House of North Kansas City.

Born March 3, 1938, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Wayne and Louise Rose, the family established a farm near Carrollton, Missouri.  She attended a one-room schoolhouse near the family farm, explored and fished the nearby ponds and streams and helped raise her brothers and sisters.  Donna graduated from Norborne High School ('56) and attended Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg, Missouri where she received a degree in retail management ('61). She was a sister of the Sigma Kappa Sorority.

Donna's career started at Harzfeld's Department Store on Petticoat Lane (Main Street) in downtown Kansas City, Missouri.  She met her lifelong love, Clyde L. Shields of Kansas City, on a blind date in 1958 and married on May 19, 1962.  They celebrated 58 years of marriage this past year; he survives of the home.  They took many long road trips throughout the USA from New York to California.  In 1973, she and Clyde adopted their son, Christopher, and she became a stay-at-home mother.  In 1979, she and Clyde welcomed their daughter, Julie, into the world.

Donna was an active participant in her community and church. She attended Antioch Community Church her entire adult life where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was a member of the Daughters of Antioch, directed the Heritage Committee and was known for her Strawberry Room at the annual Strawberry Festival. She was a frequent polling place volunteer with Clay County, attended the many sporting and band events of her children, loved to bake, garden and was the most loving, giving mother a family could have.

Additional survivors include: son, Chris (Shad) Shields of Denver, CO; daughter, Julie (Josh) Williams of Olathe, KS; two grandchildren, Paige Williams and Paityn Williams; two brothers, Gary (Sheila) Rose of Florida, and Charlie (Linda) Rose of Norborne; and two sisters, Mary Ann (Dick) Lanoue of Lee's Summit and Debbie Lou (Dave) Throgmorton of Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

The family suggests memorial contributions in Donna's memory be made to the donor's choice.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation with funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, at Antioch Community Church in Kansas City, with visitation beginning at 9:30 A.M., with services to follow at 10:30 A.M.  Burial will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Tuesday, January 14, 2020, in Smith Cemetery, near Mandeville, MO.  Please remember to share your memories of Donna with the family by visiting www.thurmanfuneralhome.com .
