GARY LEE SHANK

Gary Lee Shank, 75, of Richmond, MO died Sunday, January 20, 2013 at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.
Gary was born on May 26, 1937 in Sabetha, KS to Pearl Warren and Emma Lydia (Imthurn) Shank. He graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1955. He graduated from KU with a Bachelor of Education and began teaching. He ultimately went back to Emporia and got his Masters. Gary retired as a High School Counselor from Holton, KS.
Gary is survived by his wife Joan (Bingham), of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Courtney Mohan of Santa Monica, CA and Lisa Mohan of Santa Monica, CA; two sisters, Peggy Cannon of Lake Tapawingo, MO and Joyce Rinier of Eugene, OR; and one granddaughter, Mallory Sara Upton Santa Monica, CA; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by one son, Davis Jack Shank; one brother, Gene Shank; and one sister, Darlene Bartley.
Gary was an avid sports enthusiast playing tennis, basketball and pitcher in baseball where he received the nickname "Hooks" Shank. He also had a knack at winning Jeopardy from the couch. He was a member of the Baptist Church in Richmond. He was also a published writer of the book, "Nathan Sands, The Man and His Story".

It was the family's request to have no services. Interment will be at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Hiawatha, KS at a later date. Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond is in charge of the arrangements. On-line condolences may be left on our website at www.thurmanfuneralhome.com
