ILA MAE HAMMOND
Ila Mae Hammond, 79, of Richmond, MO died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Center Point Hospital in Independence, MO.
Mae was born on February 19, 1934 in Pomona, MO to Clifford E. and Sibyl (Goyer) Bryan. She married Gerald Neal Hammond of West Plains, MO on October 18, 1952. They moved from Camp Chaffee, AR to Lawrence, KS and then to Richmond, MO in 1957. Together they owned and operated Gerald's Barber Shop on the square of Richmond. Gerald preceded her in death on October 31, 1977.
Survivors include one son, Michael Neal Hammond of Richmond; one daughter, Cathy Esther Bohanan of Richmond; two brothers; Clifford E. "Sue" Bryan, Jr. of West Plains, MO and Bob E. "Nancy" Bryan of West Plains; and two sisters, Martha Carter of West Plains and Maxine Casey of Braddock Heights, MD. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mae was preceded in death by two brothers, David Bryan and Dan Bryan; and two sisters, Margaret Nagala and Bonnie Smith.
Mae was a 1952 graduate of West Plains High School. In 1976 she attended the Farrell Academy of Barber Styling and Hair Design in Kansas City, MO and received her diploma as a Licensed Barber. She was Co-owner and Co-operator of Gerald and Mae's Barber and Style Shop in Richmond, later retiring in 2002. Mae enjoyed gardening, reading and most of all taking care of her family. She was of the Evangelical/Christian Faith.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the either the Ray County Salvation Army, the Wounded Warriors or to the Donor's choice.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be Saturday, January 18, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery.
