Obituary

John Edward Scowley, M.D., 72, of Richmond, died Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at St. Luke's Hospital East in Lee's Summit.

John was born on August 20, 1948 in a small town north of Chicago, IL. The son of Edward Leroy and Kathryn (Kincaid) Scowley.  He was united in marriage to Barbara Phipps of Kansas City on November 26, 1983; she survives of the home.

Additional survivors include one son, John "Scott" Scowley and fiancé Megan Werle of Kansas City; one daughter, Erica Clough and her husband Case of Lone Jack; and granddaughter, Collins Clough.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Peter Scowley and sister, Kathy Hendrickson.

Dr. John "Doc" Scowley, M.D. was raised on a farm in Paw Paw, MI where he graduated high school in 1966. Dr. Scowley enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1968 where he was stationed in Phan Rang, Vietnam as a mechanic on F-100 aircraft.  Returning stateside in September of 1970 Dr. Scowley moved to Alabama close to his life long friend Mickey Pitts, who he met in the Air Force. Mickey's father was instrumental in persuading Dr. Scowley to pursue his education at the University of Alabama where he graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Biology and a minor in Chemistry. Dr. Scowley furthered his education obtaining a Doctorate of Medicine from the American University of the Caribbean. Dr. Scowley's residency brought him to the Kansas City area in 1982. In 1985 he established roots in Richmond, MO with his wife Barb. In 1988 Dr. Scowley purchased Dr. Davault medial practice for years known as The Medical Center, which later joined Meritas Health in 2016. Dr. Scowley served the Richmond community for 35 years in numerous capacities including the Medical Director of Ray County Ambulance and board member, Richmond School Board, Medical Director of Ray County Memorial Hospital- Emergency Room, Medical Director of Shirkey's Nursing Home and Hospice, and adjunct instructor for University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School. Dr. Scowley was a supporter of organizations such as American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Duck's Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, and Pheasant's Forever. Dr. Scowley enjoyed time with family, friends, the lake, cooking/grilling, out in nature hunting or fishing, Kansas City Chiefs Football, Kansas City Royals, and The University of Alabama Football. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to either the United Christian Presbyterian Church or the Missouri State Veteran's Cemetery in Higginsville.  They can be left at or mailed to Thurman Funeral Home, 507 East Main Street-P.O. Box 190, Richmond, MO 64085.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2020 at the United Christian Presbyterian Church in Richmond.  Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2020 at the United Presbyterian Church in Richmond. Masks will be required to attend all services.  Private family committal service will be held on Thursday, January 14, 2020 at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Higginsville.  Full military honors to be provided by the United States Air Force and the Ray County Veterans.  Please remember to share your memories of Dr. John at www.thurmanfuneralhome.com .
