MABEL LEIGH (HICKS) GAINES

Mabel Leigh (Hicks) Gaines 85, of Lenexa, KS, peacefully left this life on Friday, March 14th at Shawnee Mission Hospital.

Mabel was born on Aug. 16, 1928 to Gordan and Mabel Hicks of Gladstone, MO.  She was a graduate of North Kansas City High School. She was married to Elwood Gaines of Orrick, MO. on April 12, 1950. They lived most of their lives in Richmond, MO before moving to Lenexa, KS 6 years ago to be closer to her daughter, where she was a mother and homemaker.

Mabel and Elwood were avid golfers and enjoyed many activities with friends and family at Shirkey Golf Course. Elwood preceded her in death along with two sisters, Lola Builer and Betty Smith; two brothers, Bob Hicks and John Hicks. Her surviving sister, Francis Ryan, (who was vigilant in helping Mabel remember to take her meds), resides in Madison, Wisc.  Mabel was a member of United Methodist Church of Richmond.

Mabel leaves  behind a son and his wife, Dennis and Beth Gaines of Vallejo, Calif. and Denise and Jim Clark of Lenexa, KS., six grand- children, two great- grand- children, seven nieces and eight nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at Thurman Funeral Home, Richmond, MO at 2:30 on Sunday, March 16th. Visitation will be Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 2:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. A private burial will be at a later date in the Richmond Memory Gardens Cemetery.
