Obituary

Peggy LaRue Sturgeon, 91, of Richmond, died Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at Shirkey Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Richmond.

Peggy was born on September 6, 1926 in Missouri City, to William Arthur and Nannie Armethia (Hughes) Covey. She married Thomas Russell Sturgeon of Stet,  on April 12, 1957. They later divorced.

Survivors include; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Bill Francis of Richmond and Judy and Don Franklin of Richmond; daughter-in-law, Barbara Sturgeon of Richmond; one brother and sister-in-law, Art and Anita Covey of Richmond; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Rusty and Toni Sturgeon, Tammy and Tony Deatherage, Rick and Lori Sturgeon, Cindy Sturgeon, Thomas and Heather Sturgeon, Gennie and Shawn Cowger, Chris and Kayla Sturgeon, Dawn Houston, Denise Francis, Chad and Chrissy Burnett, Brandi St. Amour, Crystal and Travis Darnell and Lynn and Jeffrey Floyd; 34 great-grandchildren;  several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by one son, Russell Eugene Sturgeon; four brothers, Hubert Covey, Charles Allen Covey, Billy Covey and Arvel Covey; four sisters, Violet Bloss, Dorothy Harshner, Catherine Griffin and Hazel Houston; and one granddaughter, Deanna Moyer.

Peggy attended school in Missouri City.  She obtained her beautician license and owned and operated a beauty shop "LaRue's Coiffeurs" in Henrietta for many years.  A woman of many talents she went on to become the mayor of Henrietta.  She was a member of several community advisory boards including Salvation Army and MARC.  She also worked as a dispatcher for the Richmond Police Department. Peggy loved the Lord and was very active in her church. She was a member of the Richmond Church of God for many years and is currently a member of the Richmond Assembly of God.  She was instrumental in the formation of the group "God Squad" and was its president for many years.  She wrote many programs and skits including the making of costumes for their performances.  In her "spare time", Peggy loved to crochet and make quilts.  Those fortunate to receive one of her masterpieces have a gift to treasure.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Richmond Assembly of God Church.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 27, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Richmond Assembly of God.  Funeral services will follow visitation on Friday, at 2:00 p.m. at the church.  Burial will be in Richmond Memory Gardens.  Online condolences may be left on our website at www.thurmanfuneralhome.com
