SHIRLEY OPAL COEN

Shirley Opal Coen, 67, of Napoleon, MO died Saturday, December 23, 2017 at her home.

Shirley was born on February 7, 1950 in Hamburg, IA to Ople Bradley and Virginia (Edgington) Thomas. She married Michiel E. Coen of Lexington, MO on November 26, 1971. He survives of the home.

Additional survivors include; two daughters and one son-in-law, Tisa J. Coen of Lexington, MO and Tara J. and David McBath of Kansas City, MO; one brother and sister-in-law, Don and Betty Thomas of Littlefield, AZ; one sister and brother-in-law, Joyce A. and Mike Cochrane of Kansas City; 6 grandchildren, Michiela Coen, Sonja McBath, Ian McBath, David McBath, Jr., Merissa McBath and Ric McBath; 16 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by one brother, Larry Kenneth Phipps.

Shirley grew up in Rayville, MO and attended the Rayville Grade School. She was a 1968 graduate from Richmond High School. She later attended cosmetology school in Lexington after High School. Shirley worked as a hair dresser in Richmond for 30 years. Later in life she attended and graduated from Wentworth Military Academy, with a 4.0 G.P.A. where she received her Associates Arts Degree in 2012. Over the years Shirley performed as LuLu the clown. She was the founder of the Tuesday's Child for unwed pregnant girls in crisis. She was also founder of the Valentines for Veterans. Shirley authored many poems, stories and books. She volunteered for multiple organizations including; Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Shirkey's Hospice. Shirley was lovingly known to many people as the candy lady.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Shirkey's Hospice.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond. Visitation will be Saturday, December 30, 2017 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Thurman Funeral Home in Richmond.  Inurnment will be at a later date.
