Vera and her husband spent their working life on the farm. Their first eight years were spent on the Ira Thornton farm in Maysville, MO, and then they moved to the Rockingham Community, where they purchased the farm they lived on until they retired to Richmond in 1991.
Vera was active in the community, serving causes that were important to her, her faith, educational opportunities and farming. She was a long time member of the Rockingham Church of the Brethren, serving as moderator for the final 17 years of the church's being. She was the only woman to hold this position. Vera served on the Ray County Board of Services for 20 years and was a seamstress for many years. Vera was most proud of being a wife, mother, and farmer. She was often outside with the farm animals, driving the tractor, and farming with her husband.
